The hardest thing in my closet to buy is not a dress or a coat. It is a pair of pants I can wear to work without hemming, without a sagging crotch, and without the leg opening swallowing my shoes.

Petite pants solve part of that, but only if you understand what to look for. Here is what I have learned across roughly a decade of buying and altering trousers on a 5’1” frame.

The Three Measurements That Decide Everything

Any pair of pants is controlled by three numbers. Learn yours once and you can shop from a size chart in two minutes.

Inseam. Measure from the top of your inner thigh to the floor. For petite pants, a full-length trouser should run 26 to 28 inches, a cropped or ankle length 23 to 25 inches.

Rise. The distance from the crotch to the waistband. Petite rises should be roughly 1.5 inches shorter than regular. A regular mid rise is 9 to 10 inches; a petite mid rise is 8 to 9.

Leg opening. The width of the hem. On a short frame, a leg opening wider than 16 inches starts to look like it is wearing you.

The Styles That Work (and the Ones That Fight You)

Tapered trousers

The single most reliable petite pant. A taper narrows from the thigh to the ankle, which follows the leg instead of fighting it. This is my daily workhorse. Look for a 26 to 28 inch inseam and a leg opening around 12 to 13 inches.

Straight leg

Safe and classic. A straight leg works if it is cropped at the ankle. Left full length, it drags and shortens you. Aim for 25 to 27 inches.

Wide leg

The trend everyone wants and the one that fails most on short women. A wide leg can work, but only cropped to 24 or 25 inches and worn with a heel or a fitted top. Too long and too wide, it cuts you at the ankle and makes you look shorter.

Cropped and ankle

The easiest win. A cropped pant that ends right at the ankle bone, around 23 to 25 inches, shows skin at the narrowest part of the leg and adds height. This is why cropped trousers are a petite staple.

Culottes and gauchos

Skip these unless you are very deliberate. The volume below the knee tends to shorten the leg. The counterfactual: if you have long legs for your height, culottes can work. On my short-leg, long-torso build, they make me look stumpy, so I avoid them.

Where the Waist Should Sit

A high rise is your friend, but only a properly scaled one. A true petite high rise sits at or just below your natural waist and measures 9.5 to 10.5 inches. A regular high rise of 11 to 12 inches will land on your ribs.

The waistband should sit flat against your waist with no gap at the back. A back gap of more than an inch means the pants are cut for a different curve. Tailoring a waist gap costs $20 to $35 and is only worth it on good fabric.

Brands That Cut Petite Pants Well

  • Ann Taylor Petite — the best work trousers I have found. Shoulders and rises are actually scaled, and the cropped straight leg is near perfect. Prices $89 to $148.
  • LOFT Petite — softer, cheaper, good for a relaxed office. Their petite inseam runs 25 to 27 inches.
  • ASOS Petite — the widest selection for the price. Quality is hit or miss, but at $35 to $60 a pair it is cheap enough to test what you like.
  • Everlane — fewer petite-specific cuts, but their ankle trousers in a 26.5 inch inseam are clean. Around $98.
  • Banana Republic Petite — tapered trousers and suit pants with a true petite rise. Prices $98 to $160.

The Tailoring Math

I budget for one alteration on almost every pair of pants. Here is what it costs and what it is worth.

AlterationCostWorth it?
Hem only$10 to $20Yes, always
Take in waist$20 to $35Yes, on good fabric
Shorten rise$30 to $50Rarely; return instead
Taper the leg$25 to $40Sometimes, on wool trousers

The one fix that is never worth it is shortening a rise. It changes the whole crotch curve and rarely looks right. If the rise is wrong, the pants are wrong.

A Note on Length and Shoes

A full-length trouser on a short frame should end about half an inch above the floor when you are barefoot. With a low heel, that same hem will hover right at the top of the shoe. Longer than that and the fabric pools.

Cropped pants pair best with a pointed toe or a low heel. A pointed flat visually extends the leg more than a rounded toe does.

Start Here

Buy one pair of tapered, high-rise trousers in a neutral color, get the hem right, and wear them for a week. You will learn more from that one good pair than from reading a hundred guides.
